Historical Trail of Bom Jesus do Monte review: 4.4 from 5 reviews

Bom Jesus trail review

My verdict. Two hours with a guide at the sanctuary for €30, and no transport. It has a score of 4.4 from 5 reviews. The most useful thing anybody has written about this tour is Lynda’s note about mobility.

What the 4.4 from five reviews tells you

Five ratings averaging 4.4 add up to 22 points out of a possible 25, so at least two of the five people did not give it full marks. One of them is visible: Antonet left four stars and wrote in Dutch. With five reviews so far, one more would move it noticeably: a sixth five-star review would lift the average to 4.5, and a sixth one-star review would bring it to 3.8, so the written comments are worth reading alongside the score.

The walking tour, for comparison, has 5.0 from 10 reviews.

Lynda’s review, which is the reason to read this page

Lynda gave it five stars and wrote: “I am less mobile than the rest of the group and solutions were found around it.” That is the single most useful sentence in the review pool for this whole site, because the sanctuary is a 116 m climb up 573 steps by the Confraria’s count, or 583 by English Wikipedia’s, and almost everyone with a bad knee arrives worried about it.

What it proves is that one guide, on one day, worked around one person’s pace. If you need it to be true for you, write to the operator before you book and say plainly what you can and cannot do. The accessibility page sets out the ground: the funicular, the road to the top, the paid parking beside the basilica, and where the level ground actually is.

The transport it does not include

This is worth planning for. The two hours start at the sanctuary. Getting there is yours to arrange: TUB line 2 leaves from Avenida da Liberdade and from the train station and takes about half an hour, every thirty minutes on weekdays and hourly on Sundays. Allow an hour each way with the waiting and you have turned a two-hour tour into a four-hour outing. The getting there page has the detail, including the parking.

What you are paying for when entry is free

The grounds are free and open around the clock and the basilica is free. €30 buys two hours of somebody telling you what the fountains are doing: five for the senses on the zigzag flight, three for Faith, Hope and Charity on the flight above it, and eight primitive Passion chapels of which the first two survive. That is a real thing to buy, and this is the cheapest way on the site to buy it. Why there is no ticket is the same argument from the other end.

What works

  • The cheapest guided option at the sanctuary itself
  • Two hours on one site, which is time enough to stop at each fountain
  • The clearest accessibility signal in the review pool here
  • Insurance included

Worth knowing

  • 4.4 from 5 reviews so far
  • No transport to the meeting point — plan the bus
  • Two hours means no cathedral, no city, no Guimarães
  • One four-star review, written in Dutch
Insider tip

Book an afternoon slot and stay behind afterwards. The tour ends at the top, the grounds never close, and the park and lake behind the basilica are where most people realise they have been rushing.

Who it is for

Anyone already in Braga who wants the site explained and does not want to give up a whole day for it. If you are coming from Porto for the day, plan the train timetable carefully, because you reach this two-hour tour under your own steam — the Porto page covers that trade, and the full comparison has the rest.

Frequently asked questions

How should I read this tour’s rating?

It has five ratings so far, so each new review can move the average noticeably. The reviews hub explains how I read these.

Does the tour include getting to Bom Jesus?

No. Transport to the meeting point is not included, so you arrive under your own steam. TUB line 2 runs from Avenida da Liberdade and the train station to the foot of the hill in about half an hour, every thirty minutes on weekdays and hourly on Sundays — the detail is on the getting there page.

Is it suitable if I cannot manage the steps?

One reviewer, Lynda, said she was less mobile than the rest of her group and that solutions were found around it. That is encouraging; tell the operator what you need when booking. Read the accessibility page first, and note that the walking tour includes a transfer up and the funicular ticket.
